Every South African summer, daring cyclists tackle the Munga, dubbed “the toughest race on Earth.” Spanning 1,000km through the Karoo, riders face brutal winds, grueling roads, and scorching heat to reach Doolhof Wine Farm in Wellington within five days. For some, it’s a race; for others, a pilgrimage. The Munga is a test of survival, revealing the life and person you can become. Yet, the Karoo’s quiet mystery often fades amid exhaustion.

THESE ARE THE MUNGA PRINCIPLES
THIS IS A TOUR NOT A RACE
- Jack Black will accompany the riders each day.
- Riders are welcome to cycle at their own pace — every rider will be fully supported.
- Three support vehicles will be deployed: one ahead of the first rider, one behind the last rider, and one roving in between.
- Mini waterpoints with snacks and sandwiches will be set up daily, with brunch or lunch stops planned at the official Munga WPs/RVs wherever possible.
- The intention is to set off very early (between 04:00 and 06:00) and finish by 17:00–18:00 each evening, ensuring enough time to enjoy a hot shower, followed by dinner and wine together, as we reflect on the day’s experiences.
- Please note that this is a tour, not a race — just in case there’s any confusion.

Day 0 – 4th Oct Arrive & Check in at Villa Rose Guest House, Bloemfontein
Day 1 – 5th Oct Bloemfontein to Van der Kloofdam (WP1, WP2, RV1)
Day 2 – 6th Oct Van der Kloofdam to Britstown (WP3, WP4, RV2)
Day 3 – 7th Oct Britstown to Loxton (WP5, WP6, RV3)
Day 4 – 8th Oct Loxton to Sutherland (WP7, Fraserburg, WP8, RV4)
Day 5 – 9th Oct Sutherland to Da Doer Padstal (JoJo1, WP9)
Day 6 – 10th Oct Da Doer Padstal to Doolhof Wines (WP10, RV5/Ceres, Finish)
Day 7 – 11th Oct From Doolhof Wines – Return home
SOMETHING SPECIAL
The Munga Race Route tour follows the iconic Munga mountain bike race for the most part. Although on two of the days we will expose you to some private trails and sections that are not part of the race route. As such, it is steeped not just in race history, but in the varied and mysterious life that make up a karoo sheep farmer! Some unique aspects include:
- Roughly 1000km of the iconic Munga Race route
- Between 800m and 1200m of climbing per day
- Iconic race sections and passes including the Ouberg Pass, Razzle Dazzle, Bo-Swaarmoed and more!
- Farm-cooked meals in the evenings by some of the Munga race hosts themselves
- A selection of fine wines to make the days riding more memorable
- A visit to two remote Boer War battlefields and a short talk at each.
- Access to vehicle support where possible.
- A chance to earn 3 tour stripes (white), and become a Sarge!
***Please note: The tour starts in Bloemfontein and ends in Wellington. Riders need to arrange their own transport to the start and from the finish. It is possible to have your car driven from Bloemfontein to Doolhof potentially at a fee (TBA). It is also possible to assist with travel arrangements so give us a shout!
