The Munga Pretoria-East, part of the Munga Swords Series, is never just a race. It’s an experience. A long conversation with yourself, carried out over dust, sweat, laughter, and quiet moments of reflection. That alone is reason enough to line up at the start.
What makes this event special is that it offers a safe, fast, and well-managed route, perfect for riders who want to go long without the stress of traffic or unpredictable conditions. (It’s the Munga, so there will be challenges!) Whether you’re preparing for bigger ultra-distance goals or simply want to see how your body and mind respond over extended hours in the saddle, this is the ideal proving ground.
The roads are classic South African gravel, without the hardships of the Karoo or North-West roads: beautiful, flowing, and honest. Mostly smooth, with the occasional reminder that you’re riding in the real world, not a brochure. They invite speed but demand respect. It’s the kind of terrain that lets you settle into a rhythm, test your pacing, and learn valuable lessons about patience, nutrition, and resilience.
But beyond the riding, this is where the human side of cycling really shines. Families support from the sidelines. Friends ride together, suffer together, and laugh at the same bad jokes hour after hour. The shared effort turns strangers into teammates, and teammates into friends. It’s a place where finishing matters more than position, and where encouragement often comes exactly when you need it most.
This year, the event will be especially meaningful for me. I’ll be lining up with my sister’s “laaitie”, Jan-Josef, as he takes on his very first 50 km. He’s young, passionate, and completely infatuated with Munga cycling, dreaming big and already talking about earning a Munga medal for the ultimate prize: bragging rights at school. Riding alongside him, watching him discover what it means to push a little further than he thought possible, is what this event is truly about. It’s about passing something on.
The Munga Grit is also an exceptionally long training ride in a race environment. You experience race logistics, water points, pacing decisions, and mental fatigue, without the overwhelming scale of the longest ultras. It gives you a genuine taste of what lies ahead, while still being accessible to a wide range of riders.
Supported by passionate organisers and volunteers who go the extra mile, the Munga Grit Pretoria-East feels less like a commercial event and more like a community gathering built around shared hardship and shared joy.
If you’re wondering whether you’re “ready,” that’s exactly the point. This isn’t the end goal; it’s the beginning. A place to learn, to test yourself, and to remember why you ride in the first place.
